Integrate YouTube videos into websites in compliance with the GDPR

Owner & Managing Director of ithelps Digital. Since 2013, he has been deeply engaged in SEO and online marketing.
The General Data Protection Regulation comes into force on 25 May 2018. Website operators are unsure - what to look out for? In the first part of a series of articles on the GDPR and its pitfalls for your online presence, we show you how you can embed GDPR-compliant YouTube videos on your website.
The GDPR is intended to ensure that no personal data is passed on without the consent of the data subject (data subject from whom the data originates).
If you use YouTube videos on your website, you are unknowingly passing on your visitor's data to YouTube. If a website is loaded in which a YouTube video is embedded, YouTube "knows" that the website has just been loaded and who is on your website.
You therefore pass on the website visitor's data to YouTube without their consent. This is anything but ideal in terms of the GDPR.
In this video, I'll show you how to integrate YouTube videos into your website or webshop in a legally correct way without getting into trouble with the General Data Protection Regulation.
Embed YouTube videos correctly on your website - option 1
YouTube offers a solution - an extended data protection mode. How to activate it:
- Select the video you want to embed on your website
- Click on "Share"
- Click on "Embed"
- Tick the box "Activate extended data protection mode"
Do you have to replace all "old" YouTube videos on the website?
Unfortunately, yes. You also have to change the integration of all existing YouTube videos.

Option 2: WordPress plugin for GDPR-compliant YouTube videos
There is a WordPress plugin that ensures that the data is only transmitted to YouTube after the play button has been pressed. You can find the WordPress plugin here.
Option 3: GDPR-compliant YouTube videos in Joomla with JCE Editor Pro
If you embed a video from YouTube in the Joomla backend into a blog article or page using JCE Editor Pro, you get the link from YouTube as usual.
Then proceed as follows:
- Click on the "Insert/Edit Media" button, the Media Manager will open
- Under Media Type, select "YouTube" from the drop-down menu
- Enter the link under URL
- Open the "Media Options" tab
- Tick the box next to "Enable privacy-enhanced mode"
- Then click on "Insert"
The advantage of this option is that you don't have to call up each of your videos again in YouTube to change the link manually.
Click on your video in the editor to select it and then on the "Insert/Edit Media" button. Tick the "Enable privacy-enhanced mode" box and click "Update". Done.
One of our readers, Otto, drew my attention to the fact that there is also a Joomla extension for this purpose. It is the paid extension JMG YouTube DSGVO.
JMG YouTubeDSGVO adds an opt-in function to existing YouTube extensions. The plugin ensures that the video is only loaded and the data transmitted to YouTube after the "Activate button" has been pressed.

Thanks for the addition, Otto.
Update July 2019: Another plugin option for embedding YouTube videos and Vimeo videos in Joomla in compliance with the GDPR is the "Aimy Video Embedder" extension.
Here is a short introduction video:
If you are interested in the plugin, click here to go to the page: https: //www.aimy-extensions.com/joomla/video-embedder
With these 5 variants, you can embed YouTube videos into your website in compliance with data protection regulations. After that, there's only one thing left to do.
Complete your privacy policy
Every website must have a privacy policy. This defines how you handle the data you receive. Write in your privacy policy that when someone plays a YouTube video, the data is transmitted to YouTube.
