In this article, we will look at the topic of Shopify costs. We want to try to analyse Shopify's pricing so that everyone can understand it. With our "Shopify Plan Calculator" you can calculate the most favourable Shopify plan for you.

Many consider Shopify to be the best e-commerce shop system. At least it can be counted among the best shop systems if you look at the range of services and functions. Shopify offers a solution for every size of business at acceptable prices.

If it weren't for the confusion regarding the price plans. At first glance, these are admittedly somewhat confusing.

On the one hand, there are the costs of the online shop, which are incurred on a regular monthly basis. On the other hand, there are additional costs such as transaction fees, online credit card fees and costs for extensions and additional functions that are not included in the respective tariff.

But before you let me confuse you, take a look at Sebastian's explanatory video - it all sounds very simple and plausible 😊

Now that you've seen Sebastian's video, let's continue with an overview of the standard plans, looking at the monthly costs for Basic Shopify, Shopify Shopify, Advanced Shopify and how Shopify prices are made up.

What is not included in the Shopify price

Basically, you can use Shopify "out of the box" in all tariffs. The shop system provides everything you need.

However, some services are not included:

  • Country-specific domains are not included in the Basic plan. Email addresses are not included as standard in any package. Alternatively, you can host both with a third-party provider and link them to Shopify.
Note from Shopify regarding email hosting: You must use an external email hosting service that provides email forwarding from Shopify. Shopify does not provide email hosting services, but does offer unlimited email forwarding accounts.
  • There is currently no German phone support. For urgent questions or if you need help and support, you will need to contact email support. However, they respond very quickly.
  • Shopify does not have a large selection of designs by default. However, if you don't like the standard designs, you can find more paid themes in the Shopify Theme Store.
  • As with all shop providers, Shopify does not provide legal advice. As each country has its own country-specific legal regulations, it is advisable to consult a legal or tax expert in case of doubt or questions, for example about the legal notice, terms and conditions or tax issues. At the very least, you should inform yourself via relevant websites and forums.

What additional fees are incurred with Shopify?

There may be additional fees on top of the monthly shop costs: Fees for your shop's payment gateway and transaction fees. These apply to all tariffs. Exception: If you use Shopify Payments, some of the fees do not apply.

Payment gateway and credit card fees

These are costs that are incurred if, for example, payment via credit card, PayPal, SOFORT Überweisung or Klarna invoice is offered. The fee is charged by the respective payment provider of the selected gateway.

Shopify transaction fees

These Shopify fees apply to all online transactions per transaction, unless Shopify Payments is used. The fees are 2% (Basic Shopify), 1% (Shopify) and 0.5% (Advanced Shopify). If Shopify Payments is used, the additional Shopify transaction fees are waived, but not the payment gateway fees.

The transaction fees are also waived for classic payment methods such as standard bank transfer, cheque or cash payments.

Monthly or annual payment?

Especially at the beginning, when you don't yet know where things will go with your online shop, it can be advantageous to opt for monthly payment. The prices are higher, but you can cancel at any time if business doesn't develop as you'd like. And don't forget: you can test Shopify free of charge for 3 days beforehand.

If business is going well and you decide to continue, it's worth increasing the term. Shopify offers a 25% discount for annual subscriptions to the Basic, Shopify or Advanced plan. This discount applies to the first year.

If you choose a 3-year plan for Shopify Plus, you will be offered a monthly discount and lower fees.

Interpretation of the result

Here you can find out how best to interpret the results and which other factors you should take into account when making your decision.

  1. Recommended plan: The calculator recommends the plan with the lowest total cost based on your stated monthly turnover and number of transactions. This is a good starting point for your decision.

  2. Cost breakdown: Note the detailed cost breakdown for each plan. Even if a plan is not recommended, the cost difference could be small, which could make other factors more important.

  3. Thresholds: Pay attention to the points at which the recommendation changes. This can help you understand at what revenue or transaction volume an upgrade would make sense.

Other factors to consider

While price is an important factor, you should also consider the following aspects in your decision:

  1. Growth potential: If you anticipate rapid growth, it might make sense to choose a higher plan to benefit from additional features and avoid frequent upgrades.

  2. Feature set: Higher plans offer additional features such as advanced reporting options, lower credit card fees and more employee accounts. Consider which features are important to your business.

  3. International sales: If you want to sell internationally, higher plans offer more options for currencies and languages.

  4. Customer service: With higher plans, you get prioritised support, which can be beneficial for time-sensitive issues.

  5. Seasonal fluctuations: Factor seasonal sales fluctuations into your calculations. You could choose the plan based on your average annual turnover or switch between plans to cover seasonal peaks.

  6. Payment provider: Using Shopify Payments can reduce transaction fees. Factor this into your calculation if you plan to use this service.

  7. Long-term costs: Remember that annual payments are often cheaper than monthly payments. Take this into account in your long-term cost planning.

The Shopify Plan Calculator is an excellent starting point for your decision. It gives you a clear overview of the cost structure of the different plans. Nevertheless, you should include the additional factors mentioned above in your final decision.

Remember: the cheapest plan is not always the best for your business. Choose the plan that offers your business the best growth potential and the features you need to be successful.

Which of Shopify's plans is right for whom?

Shopify Starter

If you don't want to open a shop, but want to sell your products through multiple channels such as your website, blog or Facebook, then this plan is a good choice. For just €5 per month, you can add buy buttons and accept credit card payments.

Basic Shopify: the easiest way to start your online business

If you are just starting out and want to open your first online shop, or if you only offer a few products, Shopify Basic (€24 per month) is a good choice. Although the transaction fees are slightly higher than with Shopify or Advanced Shopify, this is not an issue for a small number of products or sales.

Shopify Shopify: the online shop tariff for those who want more

With Shopify's Shopify plan, you pay €45 more than the entry-level plan, but you get a lot of added value in return. For example, professional reports for an overview of the most important KPIs and the performance of your shop. This is particularly useful if you generate a certain amount of regular sales with your shop.

Advanced Shopify: (almost) limitless possibilities

If your sales figures are going through the roof, then the Advanced Shopify plan with its almost limitless possibilities is the best choice. At €289 per month, it is the most expensive of the Standard tariffs. The savings potential with this tariff lies in the transaction costs. They are significantly lower than those of the previous tariffs.

This means that the more you sell, the more the basic costs are relativised.

The big advantage of the Shopify Advanced plan is the individualisation of the reporting. This gives you even deeper insights into the performance of your shop and allows you to control it in a targeted manner.

Shopify Plus

Shopify Plus is an enterprise solution. It is aimed at larger companies with an extensive product range that want to get into online retail and includes everything - really everything - that companies need.

Advantages for Shopify Plus customers:

  • A dedicated support team
  • Better access to the Shopify system via an API interface.
  • In the event that you want to operate the shop in multiple languages, additional shops will be made available to you free of charge.

So, I think you should now have all the information about Shopify costs and should be familiar with it so far.
