What Is the Domain Popularity - Definition And Differences To Other Metrics?

The Domain Popularity refers to the number of domains that link to a Website. In the context of search engine optimization, domain popularity is a relevant KPI (Key Performance Indicator).

Not to be confused with "domain popularity" is "link popularity". Here the number of all links of a website that refer to your website is counted. It is, therefore, a quantitative measurement.

Example: Website A links to 500 links on the various subpages, a page-wide blogroll and Website B in the footer.

Website B, therefore, has a link popularity of 500, the domain popularity is 1.

This picture clearly shows how the domain popularity and the link popularity differ from each other.

The domain popularity is a qualitative KPI. However, it should be noted that this step does not yet consider the quality of the link source or website from which the link comes. We will come back to this later in this article.

Further metrics for the evaluation and meaning of link sources and links are net popularity and IP popularity. Net popularity measures the number of Class C networks from which links emanate to a website. IP popularity is measured by the IP address from which a link comes.

How is domain popularity measured?

If two websites are compared by search engines, domain popularity is one of the decisive ranking factors for positioning in SERPs.

As already mentioned, domain popularity does not depend on the number of links originating from a domain. Whether multiple links in so-called page-wide blog roles or individual backlinks in the texts of a website - the only decisive factor for domain popularity is the number of linked domains.

Example:

Website A has backlinks from 10 domains, while Website B has backlinks from 20 domains.

Website A thus has a domain popularity of 10, Website B has a value of 20.

The domain popularity of website B is therefore higher.

How do I find out what domain popularity my own website has?

To find out what domain popularity your website has, there are many free tools at your disposal. For example, Ubersuggest by Neil Patel.

Ubersuggest is free and shows you the domain popularity and the link popularity as well as other analytical stats of your website.

Why does the domain Popularity exist at all?

It's been a while... Even before the big Google updates like the Panda or the Penguin Update were played out, it was easy for website operators to manipulate search engine results.

So-called black hat SEO measures such as keyword stuffing produced good rankings in the search engines.

Excursus: In keyword stuffing, relevant keywords were packed into the website texts as often as possible. The texts were written purely for search engines, content and especially the added value for the readers were not the focus.

Another ranking factor during this time was the number of links referring to a website. Search engines assumed that the more backlinks a website had, the higher its value would be. The number and relevance of the link sources were not decisive, only the number of links.

So shortly, Many backlinks = high ranking in the SERPs.

You can probably already guess what happened as a result. Links were traded, bought and sold like mass-produced goods. Where it went, anchor texts with links were set in contributions. There were article exchange shops. Business with backlinks was booming.

Also, qualitatively inferior Websites could advance in such a way to the TOP positions in the rankings. What counted was not the quality, but the quantity.

Since Google strives to deliver the best search results with the greatest added value for the users, it has put a stop to these questionable SEO measures with its updates. Today, Google even reacts to fake link profiles and link purchases with penalties such as downgrading or even removing websites from the search index for website operators.

What effects does domain popularity have as a ranking factor in search engine optimization?

Backlinks are still among the most important ranking factors. Every link that refers to your website is a so-called backlink. The number in connection with the quality of the backlinks is also decisive for the ranking of your website in the SERPs.

Now you are probably wondering what is relevant for the quality of a backlink.

In addition to domain popularity, factors such as bad neighborhood, trust and also the distribution of links on different Class C networks and IP addresses play a major role in the evaluation of backlinks. The more links come from different Class C networks and IP addresses, the more valuable these links are in terms of Google's rating.

Example of evaluation for Class C networks and IP addresses in Xovi:

Xovi shows you not only the domain popularity and the link popularity, but also the number of linked IP addresses and Class C networks.

How can I increase my domain popularity and achieve better rankings in search engines?

In general: The domain popularity is one of the most important criteria for the evaluation of the search engine relevance of a website.

So, if you want to achieve a better ranking in the search engines, you have to work on the link profile of your website. Link building is one of the offpage optimization measures and can be a lengthy process.

Especially with new websites it is a challenge to get links from other websites.

As a first step, I recommend that you list your company in all relevant directories that match your industry. This way you can not only improve your visibility regarding your customers, search engines will also be aware of your new company.

In order to generate further backlinks, link building or link building and to generate a healthy link profile with a high domain popularity, take a look at your competitors. Perform a backlink analysis of your competitors.

  • What backlinks do they have?
  • What relevance do the linked pages from which the backlinks come have for your website?
  • Could you possibly also get a backlink here?

For this you can again use the free tool Ubersuggest.

backlink analyse mitbewerber ubersuggest

  • Enter the adress of your competitor in the input field
  • Click on "Search"
  • Go to the backlink analysis in the lower-left corner
  • Have a look at the link source under Source

Once you have found out the link sources, you can also try to get a backlink from these pages or place a link.

For example, by writing an article for this website (guest article) or by the entry and your naming in the respective directory.

Also, make sure that the anchor texts linked to your website are not always the same. And if possible use the power of mailing lists, e.g. press mailing lists, etc.

When generating backlinks, attach particular importance to quality, not quantity. Your efforts will reward Google and other search engines with a good ranking.

Conclusion on domain popularity

The domain popularity (Domain Popularity or Domain Pop) is an important Key Performance Indicator (KPI) in the context of search engine optimization.

It shows how many incoming links from other domains point to your own website. In contrast to link popularity, where each individual link is counted, domain popularity only evaluates the domain.

When building links, attention must be paid to the quality of the referring domains. The more relevant the domains are and the higher the domain authority, the more valuable the backlink is for the SEO of your website.
